About the book

In 2024, with the support of the Carmignac Photojournalism Award, photojournalist Kiana Hayeri and researcher Mélissa Cornet travelled through seven provinces of Afghanistan. They met more than 100 women and girls: students barred from school and confined to their homes, journalists and activists still fighting for their rights, mothers watching history repeat itself for their daughters, and LGBTQI+ people whose existence is erased in silence.

What they documented is the Taliban's systematic dismantling of women's most basic rights: to education, to work, to move freely, to rest, even to places as ordinary as a park or a beauty salon. Amnesty International has said this persecution could amount to a crime against humanity.

No Woman's Land turns that fieldwork into an intimate portrait of what daily life has become for women since those rights were taken away. The book is built in chapters. Alongside photographs never shown before, it holds archival images, Polaroid artworks, sketches and collaborative art made with Afghan teenage girls, and extensive supplementary material: historical context, documents, and an overview of the situation of women's rights in Afghanistan. It is a record of a critical moment in history and a testament to the courage of the people living through it.

Before it became a book, the project was shown in exhibitions and publications around the world. It has since received a World Press Photo Award, two Pictures of the Year International prizes, among them first place for Issue Reporting Picture Story, and an Amnesty International Media Award. The book is co-published by Raya Editorial, Kiana Hayeri and Mélissa Cornet, with photo editing and design by Santiago Escobar-Jaramillo.
